Marlisa answered the following question on the Oprah Winfrey web site hoping to get in touch with Oprah to tell her about her dreams and get exposure for the project. It was emailed 12/24/07.

Are you on a spiritual journey?


I am on an amazing spiritual journey—Following my heart and proud of whom I am.

For years I struggled with my identity, a sense of rejection and worthlessness. I was prejudice against myself, and ashamed of my skin. I am a 37-year-old single woman of mixed race who was able to put myself thru college, work in publishing and ten years ago start my own graphic design studio.

In Guatemala, with Habitat for Humanity, I felt a sense of peace and belonging, something sadly I had never felt before. I felt a connection to the dirt and wondered if this feeling was possible. I thought, “I am from a third world country, these people are no different then I. I was born into opportunity and they were not”.

Four years later, in a moment of feeling lost and depressed I asked myself, “What will make you happy?’ My answer “to be deeply connected with the Mayan people.” A pretty strong statement when I could have said to have a husband, a baby, or be a millionaire. No. I longed to help these amazing people.
